Here's the useful part: the calculation itself is completely real, simple arithmetic. Anyone can do it by hand in about ten seconds. What it means is a matter of tradition and interpretation, not evidence — and worth enjoying with that in mind.
Reduce your full date of birth to a single digit by adding all the numbers together, then reducing repeatedly until you reach a single digit — unless you land on 11, 22, or 33 along the way, which are traditionally kept as "master numbers" and not reduced further.
