// QUANTUM + SPIRITUALITY
"Quantum" is one of the most borrowed words in modern spiritual and self-help content — quantum healing, quantum manifestation, quantum consciousness. Physicists have a name for this pattern, and it isn't a compliment: quantum mysticism (sometimes "quantum woo"), the practice of taking real quantum physics terms and applying them, metaphorically, to claims the underlying physics doesn't actually support.
Quantum mechanics is a real, extremely well-tested framework describing the behavior of matter and energy at extremely small scales — electrons, photons, atoms. Two of its most-borrowed concepts:
Superposition — a quantum system can exist in a combination of multiple states at once, until it's measured. This is genuinely strange and well-documented at the subatomic scale.
Entanglement — two particles can become correlated such that measuring one instantly tells you about the other, regardless of distance. Also real, also well-documented, and notably does not allow faster-than-light communication of information, a common misconception.
Both effects are measured in highly controlled laboratory conditions, at scales far smaller than a human cell, let alone a human personality or decision. There is no established mechanism by which "your consciousness" is in superposition, or your intentions are "entangled" with outcomes in your life. When these terms show up in spiritual content, they're functioning as evocative metaphor — borrowing the genuine strangeness of quantum physics to make an unrelated claim feel more credible.
Physicists have pushed back on this publicly and often, precisely because the borrowed credibility can make unfounded claims — including some medical ones — sound more scientifically grounded than they are.
Quantum superposition is a genuinely good metaphor for something humans already intuitively recognize: the feeling of being two things at once, undecided until a moment forces clarity. The metaphor works as a metaphor — the failure mode is presenting it as a mechanism.
